Where did our names come from?  Our names come from the most recent Greg Iles book, Blood Memory.  As my father fought pancreatic cancer, he was reading a Greg Iles book, Black Cross.  Unfortunately, my father died before he was able to finish it.  Ryan and I loved the book and began reading all of the Greg Iles' books.  They are terrific!!

I decided to name these puppies after characters, places, and/or things in the book.  Of course, the names had to modified so they could be spelled with a "y" :) ...but read the book and you'll find the "pups!"

Freedom had her pups on Dec 12, 2005....so on day 60. Earlier than we thought...but these were some BIG pups...so they were WELL done. There were 6 pups....she had the first 4 without a problem (2 solid black girls and 2 solid red boys)...but then she started pushing at 4:30am for the 5th and didn't seem to be making any progress. The general rule is 2 hrs pushing is OK...anything more and you GO TO THE VET. So at 1 hr 50 mins we called the vet....they felt she needed to come in but no huge hurry b/c she wasn't in immediate distress. So, we got Freedom and the pups to the vet a little before 8 (when they could do surgery if need be)....they gave her Oxytocin and she was pushing but made no progress (no surprise to us she had been doing that since 4:30a)...so they took an x-ray and that 5th pup was literally folded over on itself and could not come out (pelvis and head were in the same position). So, they had to operate...but of course, that pup had been stuck like that for a long time, so unfortunately, she did not make it :( It was the first pup we have ever lost..so we are devastated....I am trying to remain positive...that the 6th pup (a solid black male) was delivered via c-section ...and he was very healthy....doing great AND the MOST impt thing to us is Freedom is fine. We were VERY worried we'd lose her and that'd be the worst thing ever!!! Please visit Nevy's site...and wish her well as she's crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.
